"Ban on Fast Food TV Advertising"

"Ban on Fast Food TV Advertising"

Knowing the appeals used by print and TV advertisers, as well as the subtlety of the effects of the appeals, do you think a ban on fast food advertising during children's programming is appropriate? Do you think that it would be effective in curbing the obesity problem?  San Francisco has passed a similar measure that bans Happy Meal toys in meals that don't comply with a certain nutritional standard (here is a link to an article about it). Do you think that forcing corporations to take responsibility for obesity is effective?

  1. A ban on fast food advertising during children's programs would potentially decrease childhood obesity, but it would also impact many businesses involved. The particular channel, or channels, that airs children's programs would lose a significant amount of funding due to the restriction of available businesses able to advertise their products.
I personally believe that steps should be taken to decrease childhood (and overall) obesity, but unfortunately numerous factors must be taken into consideration.

    1. I agree there are so many more things we can do that would help. The problem isn't so much the ads during the kids shows, it's parents that don't have time to make anything at home so they order out or get it on the go. The kids may pick the place but it's the parents that suggest it and take them out to eat.

  2. I think that if you ban advertising during children's programming it could possibly lower childhood obesity, but children would see all of this advertising somewhere else. Even if there was a ban on this, the children would be exposed to fast food advertisements from other sources.

  3. I don't think a ban on fast food advertisement will solve the obesity problem. Just because they don't see it during their programming doesn't mean they wont see it during their parents Tv watching. Its gonna take a lot more than just a ban on advertising to solve this problem.

    1. I agree, just because they don't see it on TV doesn't mean that they won't see it other places. Driving down the road is plenty of advertising.

    2. I agree, there are many of differnt places to see these advertisments! So i do not think that it will make that much of a differnce in the end.

    3. The biggest problem it that we as a society are hooked on this. what children need most is not to be introduced to fast food. It sounds impossible, but I had a friend that would almost always eat with home cooked meals. ware I and my family ate out more we can see the difference in the health. Even though My friend has eaten out he doesn't crave it as much as me.

    4. One major problem I see is that we are sucked into this. What many people need to learn is restraint and control. Kids should not be introduced to fast food. Health will dramatically improve, money will be saved, patience will be gained, even more meaningful time will be spent at home with family, instead of waiting in lines demanding the food you were too lazy to make on your own.

    5. The obesity problem in children would not be solved by banning food advisements of off TV, it is going to take a lot more then that. Teaching children to have self-control over what they eat its a responsibility that all parents should take in order to help solve this problem.

  4. I don't beleive that banning the advertising of fast food will make a big differance either. It's not like people haven't heard of McDonald's before. They will still be seeing it and knowing about it just as much as they used to.

  5. I think that the issue of child obesity rests wholly on good parenting. Parents need to say no to their kids if all they want to eat is fast food because of what they may have seen on an advertisement. Good parents who are even short on time can come up with ideas and ways of how they can make healthy quick meals and probably even at a cheaper price than fast food.

    1. I completely agree! Children become obese because of the bad eating habits they learn from their parents, which stick with them through their teenage years and eventually throughout their life. It is hard to change things you have been doing for your entire life.

  6. Why do you think we as a society love fast food so much? Is it really because we are lazy? Or are we really giving in to the advertisements we see on tv?

    1. I think that society is just so busy that it is easier to grab fast food on the go. Fast food is just more convenient for people who don't have time to make a meal at home.

    2. I agree with Jacob. People who have had a long day at work and have to work everyday don't want to go home and take time to make a healthy meal. It's easier to just grab something fast so their is more time to get other things done.

    3. I think we as a people give in too much with fast food. A part of it is that we are lazy. We find it easier to drop by and order food practically made for us where in turn we lose that time to learn skills at home.

  7. The more we hold one another, as well as ourselves, responsible for the amount and type of food we intake, he better off us as a whole will be. If we don't make obesity seen as a social problem no one will ever make the necessary changed needed to fix the issue.

    1. Yeah, it is becoming a problem. The advertisement do intrigue and consumers become sucked into the manipulative design of advertisement.

  9. I don't feel like banning advertisements during children's programming is going to change much. It is appealing when you see food on the television but as a child, the way their parents eat is how they eat. I don't see it being a big issue as much as it is being a personal choice to not eat fast food.

    1. I totally agree with you. But don't you think when kids are with their parents that they're going to see all the fast food restaurants and they're going to want it and make their parents buy it? Sure the parent will say no but I think kids manipulate their parents to get what they want.

  10. The advertisements are becoming more and more of an issue. I think that they are manipulative to children eyes. They begin to want more of what they see. If they can convince children, parents will likely fulfil the wants of their children.

    1. I partially agree, but I think that parents have to take more initiative in parenting. True, children should learn to make their own decisions and have some freedom as to what they eat, but parents should lead by example, at least, and also teach their children that fast food advertisements are bogus because everything will look delicious but such a minimal amount of the foods advertised are actually healthy...

  11. Do you think some many children are overweight today because they don't go outside and play all day? Maybe it is because we don't take them every where we go any more?
    Is it bad parenting?
